The definition of assumption is the following:
– a thing that is accepted as true or as certain to happen, without proof.
We all make assumptions. This can happen daily. And unfortunately, we have all most likely experienced making a situation worse based on our assumption.
But why do we continue to make assumptions without seeking out the truth? Simple. We are scared to ask. It is easier to make an assumption then to go up to the person and have a hard conversation or to ask a question.
Yes, you can be right at times with your assumption. You can call it your gut feeling. But you don’t realize you are right until you have evidence or proof. Something has to happen or a question has to be asked.
But most of the time, we got without solving our assumption and think a person is an asshole because they didn’t say “hi” to you when you said “hi” to them. Reality, they just received a phone call with some bad news and were trying to gather their thoughts and didn’t hear you. You assume your friend is avoiding you because they are not returning your phone call so you get pissed at them. Reality, they have been working overtime and barely have time to eat or shower let alone have a conversation with you. You assume your boss is just offloading all the workload to you so they don’t have to do anything. Reality, you don’t inform them how overwhelmed you feel and continue to say “yes” to more workload.
I can type so many scenarios and you can probably think of so many scenarios on your own. I am very guilty of this and I’m aware that this is something I need to get better at starting today. Let’s all get better at this today.
So let’s ask our questions or be willing to have a hard talk to resolve our assumptions. Communication leads to clarity. Confusion (assumptions) leads to chaos.
