The saying goes, “Your words become your behavior. Your behaviors become your habits. Your habits become your destiny”. I was destined to lose $30,000 because of my habit.
From the age of 18 to 30, I had developed the habit of not checking my personal bank account. I would look at it once or maybe twice a year. The only way I knew I had money in my account was when my transactions would go through. This was a habit I had developed and it was very difficult to break. I would hear people speaking about the importance of checking your account a couple times a month. My parents would tell me to check it more often, my friends would tell me but I didn’t. It wasn’t because I didn’t want to listen, I knew they were right, it was just very hard for me to break the habit of not checking due to me not making it an importance in my life.
Our habits carry over to everything we do in life. There is no magic line that we can draw and our habits change just because we go from one role to another. When I purchased the gym, the habit of not checking the bank account went with me. I remember telling myself that I would be more vigilant with the business account. Long story short, I wasn’t. I allowed my habit to continue which led to the gym losing over $30,000 to theft. I can point the finger in many directions but at the end of the day, I should have caught this. The theft started early in small amounts and if I would have just checked the business account, I would have stopped it.
