What is one of the biggest fears of kids during Junior High and High School? Having to sit by themselves during lunch. We still experience that as adults. Many times when we are choosing a new career or place to work at, what we fear is that sense of loneliness in the beginning.
The same thing was experienced when you walked into a CrossFit gym or our CrossFit gym for the first time. There is already the fear of unknown, not knowing what you’re getting yourself into, but the fear of walking into a new place and not knowing anybody. Whenever we see this, we need to rise to the occasion and extend a hand. Whether it’s at our gym or at work or school or anywhere else, the power of shaking someone’s hand and saying “Hi” or “Welcome” is a great act of empathy. A hand shake might not mean much to you but to them, it means the world.
We have all experienced that feeling at least once in our life. We can also remember the person who shook our hand first with a smile and said “Hi”. Never forget that moment so you can continue to demonstrate it to others. Empathy can be demonstrated in so many ways and this is definitely one of them.
Remember who we are. One of our core values is Live Smart. We are referring to people smart, emotional intelligence and the ability to connect. Empathy is a great way to connect.
So remember, the next time you see someone you don’t recognize in any setting, rise to the occasion and extend a hand with a smile.
