As many of you know, last week I went to Boston to take part in a program called “Ben Bergeron Affiliate Immersion”. For those of you who don’t know who Ben Bergeron is, he is a very successful CrossFit owner and coach. He owns CrossFit New England and he has coached a team and individual athletes who have participated at the CrossFit Games and won.
The point of this program is that for two days you learn what has made CrossFit New England, Ben Bergeron, his coaching staff and members successful. Ben Bergeron, his General Manager (Harry) and his Head Coach (Morgan) reveal what they have done, what day do in a daily basis and what they learned from mistakes they made. It was an awesome experience and a great program to be a part of.
There was a lot that I learned but the biggest takeaway was this: never stop chasing excellence. It sounds so simplistic yet it is one of the hardest things to do. Chasing excellence requires a level of discipline that can feel uncomfortable. It requires doing the right thing at all time. It requires standing up for the right thing to anyone. It requires not tolerating anything just because you don’t want to get one someone’s bad side. It requires not giving into excuses. Chasing excellence needs to be the ONLY standard. There was no magic or secret to all of the success that everyone at CrossFit New England has experienced, it literally is that everyone in there chases excellence. The owner, coaches and members. You could feel it in the air. You could feel how everyone in there accepted nothing less from anyone. The spirit that they carried was absolutely contagious.
This is what CrossFit Be Someone is going to be about. I can honestly tell you this, it felt great coming back because a lot of what they said, we already do. We are on the right path to success as a gym and that is very exciting. We are only 2 years old and we are doing a lot of the right things already. But that does not mean we stop here. I can promise you this, I will NEVER stop chasing excellence for us. There is a standard that the coaches and I will operate off. We understand that we are the leaders of the gym and as leaders we set the example.
I challenge each one of you to chase excellence on everything you do. The way you make your bed, how you do your job, in your relationships, in your friendships, at the gym and with yourself. Yes it will be hard but trust me, when you witness excellence, it is so worth it!

Josh Melendez
